How To Be The Greatest

We live in a culture in which like never before, you can be known by your greatness. There are all types of platforms to elevate a voice, a gift, an art form… These platforms allow for recognition to the best and to the worst. Critics have stated that so many want to be YouTube stars and criticicize this journey to stardom and call it narcissistic. But, this desire to be great, especially stewarding God’s gifts to be great for God’s Glory, is not bad in itself. In fact, followers of Jesus were even bold enough to ask who is the greatest?!… “At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew‬ ‭18:1‬)?”” ‭‭

If you think that asking God on earth this question is surprising, you should be even more shocked at Jesus’s answer:

“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew‬ ‭18: 3-4).” ‭‭‬ ‭

Here are two shocking truths Jesus responds to those who want be the greatest:

1. Jesus does not rebuke this desire to be great. This is shocking to me! I grew up being taught the religious belief that any desire to be great would be prideful. But, not Jesus! He never labels it as wrong or being sinful. Instead, Jesus redeems the question and tells them how to be the greatest.

2. Jesus uses children as the prime example to be great!

[tweetable author=”@toddlollar”] Calvinism, unfortunately spreading, continually teaches about children being Totally depraved, evil, not even able to choose Jesus. Contrarily, Jesus tells you and me, as followers of Him to turn and actually become like these children, emptying ourselves of pride. [/tweetable] Jesus proclaims in doing this you’ll be the greatest in His Kingdom.

Get excited with me that young professionals want to be great! Do you want to be great? Let’s humble ourselves like children and become great for King Jesus in the Kingdom of God!
