Our actions are null without pure motivators to inspire us. Have you ever taken the time to sit and ask yourself what motivates, compels and mobilizes you? The Apostle Paul is very clear about what drives him to be so passionate about sharing the Good News of Jesus. “For Christ’s love compels us.” (2 Corinthians 5:14 NIV) Love and compassion are pure motivators in sharing the Good News of Jesus and His Kingdom. But what mobilizes you to live a life of compassion among those in your life? Let’s look at an excerpt from the life of Jesus to figure this out:
“He (Jesus) withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:13-14 NASB)
Here are two mobilizers of compassion in your missional living, your daily life, we see in the life of Jesus:
1. Quiet Time in Prayer – There were people all around Jesus wanting Him. We can see in this scene that Jesus was in very high demand. I’ve failed often by feeding off of this. We get an ego boost when people want us. As a young man I thought it was a godly trait to say “yes” in the moment when people needed me (when I thought they needed me). Jesus was God! There were many like the pharisees who rejected his deity so it would have been easy to show them all the time with miracles that would continually blow them away and reveal that He was truly all powerful. Yet, in this demanded upon moment, He chose to get away and to get with the Heavenly Father, the source of life. What an example for us that we are first called to love God!
In this quiet time being loved by the Heavenly Father, He gives us all we need… He gives us value, worth and and He mobilizes us in compassion.
2. Transformed Eyes – In quiet time with God, He mobilizes compassion within us by transforming our eyes. He changes the way we see people to see them in the way He sees people. How does God see people? Envision Jesus looking out at everyone from suffering on the cross and with a voice of love He tells the Father “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) [tweetable author=”@toddlollar”] Our aim in missional living is to see people like God sees people. Then respond in action. [/tweetable] After Jesus felt compassion, He healed the sick.
